Employment Letters
You may be asked to provide employment verification letters for international students and scholars for immigration-related purposes, including Social Security Number (SSN) applications, visa appointments, housing, banking, and driver’s license applications.
Information to Include
Employment letters should be printed on official department letterhead and include:
- Student or scholar’s full name
- Job title or position
- Brief description of duties
- Employment start date
- Expected end date, if applicable
- Number of work hours per week
- Physical work location
- Supervisor’s name and contact information
- Department name
- Signature from the hiring supervisor or authorized department representative
On-Campus Employment Considerations
If you hire an F-1 student for on-campus employment:
- The employment must comply with F-1 on-campus employment regulations.
- The student is generally limited to:
- 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters
- Up to 29 hours per week during official university breaks
- The student cannot begin employment until all university hiring requirements are completed.
Additional Guidance
VIS may request an updated employment letter if information is missing, unclear, or inconsistent with university records.
