Travel & Reentry

Whether you are traveling within the United States or internationally, planning ahead will help you avoid delays and complications. Before you travel, confirm that your documents are valid, accurate, and easy to access.

Documents Needed for Travel

When returning to the U.S. after a temporary absence, be prepared to present the following at the port of entry:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date
  • Your most recent Form I-94 record showing TN status
  • Your original educational degrees and transcripts
  • A signed employer support letter describing your TN position
  • Your current CV or resume

Additional Requirement for Mexican Citizens

  • A valid TN visa stamp in your passport

(Canadian citizens do not require a visa stamp but must present supporting documents at entry.)

Important Travel Considerations

Admission is case-by-case
TN status is granted at the port of entry. Each time you travel internationally, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer will review your eligibility and documentation before admitting you in TN status.

Check your I-94 after entry
After each entry to the U.S., review your electronic I-94 record:

  • Confirm your status is listed as TN
  • Confirm the expiration date matches the period requested in your employer support letter

If there are any errors, contact VIS immediately. Your I-94 controls your work authorization and length of stay.

Carry original documentation
Unlike other visa types, TN applicants are often asked to present original documents. Be sure to carry your signed employer support letter, degrees, and transcripts in your carry-on.

Travel timing and employment
If there are any changes to your role, employer, or job duties, your TN documentation must be updated before you seek reentry. Entering with outdated information can result in delays or denial.

Administrative review at the border
While many TN applications are processed quickly, CBP officers have full discretion in adjudicating TN eligibility. Be prepared to clearly explain your role and how it fits within TN professional categories.

Travel Within the U.S.

If you are traveling domestically, you do not need a visa stamp. However, you should still carry:

  • A valid passport
  • A copy of your I-94 record
  • Proof of employment (recommended)
