Maintaining TN Status
You must follow specific requirements to maintain your TN status while working in
the United States. Failing to follow these rules may affect your ability to remain
employed or stay in the U.S.
Work Authorization
Your TN status is employer-specific and position-specific.
You must:
- Work only for the employer listed in your TN application or petition
- Perform only the duties described in your employer support letter
- Work at the approved location(s)
You cannot:
- Begin employment without proper TN authorization
- Work for a new employer without obtaining new TN authorization
Changes to Your Employment
You must contact Visa and Immigration Services (VIS) before any changes, including:
- Job title or duties
- Work location
- Salary or funding source
- Department or supervisor
Changes may require a new TN application or petition before they can take effect.
Maintaining Valid Documents
You must keep the following documents valid at all times:
- Your passport (valid for at least 6 months into the future)
- Your Form I-94 record, which confirms your TN status and authorized stay
You are responsible for monitoring your expiration dates.
