Maintaining TN Status

You must follow specific requirements to maintain your TN status while working in the United States. Failing to follow these rules may affect your ability to remain employed or stay in the U.S.

Work Authorization

Your TN status is employer-specific and position-specific.

You must:

  • Work only for the employer listed in your TN application or petition
  • Perform only the duties described in your employer support letter
  • Work at the approved location(s)

You cannot:

  • Begin employment without proper TN authorization
  • Work for a new employer without obtaining new TN authorization

Changes to Your Employment

You must contact Visa and Immigration Services (VIS) before any changes, including:

  • Job title or duties
  • Work location
  • Salary or funding source
  • Department or supervisor

Changes may require a new TN application or petition before they can take effect.

Maintaining Valid Documents

You must keep the following documents valid at all times:

  • Your passport (valid for at least 6 months into the future)
  • Your Form I-94 record, which confirms your TN status and authorized stay

You are responsible for monitoring your expiration dates.

Important Reminder

It is your responsibility to maintain your TN status at all times. Staying informed and reporting changes early will help you avoid interruptions to your employment or immigration status.
