Travel & Reentry
Whether you are traveling within the United States or internationally, planning ahead
will help you avoid delays and complications. Before you travel, confirm that your
documents are valid, accurate, and easy to access.
Documents Needed for Travel
When returning to the U.S. after a temporary absence, be prepared to present the following at the port of entry:
- Passport valid at least 6 months into the future
- Valid E-3 visa stamp in your passport
- Form I-797 Approval Notice (if your E-3 was filed in the U.S.)
- Certified Labor Condition Application (LCA)
- Employment verification letter confirming your ongoing position
- Recent pay stubs (if currently employed in the U.S.)
Important Travel Considerations
Visa validity matters
You must have a valid E-3 visa stamp to reenter the U.S. If your visa has expired,
you will need to apply for a new one at a U.S. consulate abroad before returning.
Check your I-94 after entry
After each entry to the U.S., review your electronic I-94 record:
- Confirm your status is listed as E-3
- Confirm the expiration date matches your approved E-3 period
If there are any errors, contact VIS immediately. Your I-94 controls your work authorization and length of stay.
Carry employer documentation
Even with a valid visa, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer may ask for
proof of employment. Keep your employment verification letter and LCA accessible in
your carry-on.
Pending petitions and travel
If you have a pending E-3 extension or change of employer filed within the U.S., travel
may affect your case. Speak with VIS before leaving the U.S. to avoid issues with
reentry or petition processing.
Administrative processing
Visa applications at U.S. consulates may be subject to additional review. This can
delay your return without a predictable timeline. Plan travel accordingly, especially
if timing is critical.
Travel Within the U.S.
If you are traveling domestically, you do not need your E-3 visa stamp. However, you should still carry:
- A valid passport
- A copy of your I-94 record
- Proof of employment (recommended)
