Travel Within the United States

If you plan to travel within the United States during your J-1 program, you may do so. Domestic travel does not require advance approval from Visa and Immigration Services (VIS). However, you are responsible for carrying the proper documents and maintaining your J-1 status at all times.

What You Should Carry

When traveling within the United States, it's recommended that you carry the following documents:

  • Your valid passport

  • Your most recent Form DS-2019

  • Your I-94 record (electronic or printed copy)

  • Proof of current J-1 program participation (such as an appointment letter or recent pay statement)

You do not need a valid visa stamp for domestic travel.

If Your Documents Are Lost or Stolen

If your documents are lost or stolen while traveling:

  • Contact your country’s embassy or consulate to replace your passport

  • Contact VIS as soon as possible for guidance

  • Request a replacement DS-2019 if needed

Key Reminder

You may travel within the United States during your J-1 program. However, you must be able to show proof of your legal status if asked. Carrying the correct documents will help ensure a smooth travel experience.
