Automatic Visa Revalidation

Travel to Canada or Mexico

If you travel to Canada or Mexico for less than 30 days, you may be able to return to the United States using an expired J-1 visa. This process is called Automatic Visa Revalidation.


Who Can Use Automatic Visa Revalidation

You may use this option if all of the following apply:

  • You travel only to Canada or Mexico
  • You stay 30 days or less
  • You do not apply for a new U.S. visa while abroad
  • Your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date
  • You have a valid and unexpired I-94 record

You have maintained your J-1 status and will resume your program when you return


When You Cannot Use This Option

You cannot use Automatic Visa Revalidation if:

  • You travel to a country other than Canada or Mexico
  • You apply for a new U.S. visa in Canada or Mexico (even if it is still pending)
  • Your visa application is denied
  • You are a national of a country designated by the U.S. government as a state sponsor of terrorism

  • This process only allows you to re-enter the United States
  • It does not guarantee entry into Canada or Mexico
