Requesting Your DS-2019
If you will participate in a J-1 Scholar program at Stony Brook University, you must obtain a Form DS-2019.
You will use this document to:
- Pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee
- Apply for your J-1 Exchange Visitor visa
- Request entry to the United States
How the Process Works
Your host department will initiate your J-1 Scholar request in our online system, accessVIS.
Once your request is created:
- You will receive an email with instructions
- You will be asked to log into accessVIS and complete required forms
- You must upload all requested documents before processing can begin
Processing Time
VIS can only review and issue your DS-2019 after:
- All required forms are submitted
- All supporting documents are complete and accurate
Typical processing time is 5 business days or less.
When to Request Your Form
You should begin this process as early as possible after your department invites you to participate in a J-1 program.
Visa processing times vary by location, and U.S. consulates may have limited appointment availability.
Starting early will help ensure you:
- Receive your DS-2019 on time
- Schedule your visa appointment
- Arrive in the U.S. as planned
Important Reminder
You cannot apply for your J-1 visa or enter the United States without your DS-2019.
Delays in submitting documents or scheduling a visa appointment may affect your program start date.
