In-Person Requirements for J-1 Scholars
J-1 scholars are required to engage in in-person program activities due to the exchange visitor nature of the J-1 program. The purpose of the program is to promote cultural and academic exchange, which requires regular physical presence at the host institution.
J-1 scholars may not be designated as fully remote at any time during their program.
Limited Remote Participation
Effective July 1, 2023, the U.S. Department of State allows limited remote participation for certain J-1 categories, including:
-
Professors
-
Research Scholars
-
Short-Term Scholars
Under this guidance, J-1 scholars may participate in remote work up to 40% of their program activity (for example, two out of five workdays per week), provided that all of the following conditions are met:
-
The host department has an established hybrid or remote work policy
-
The scholar continues to maintain an active, in-person presence at the host site
-
The remote arrangement is consistent with the goals of the exchange visitor program
-
The arrangement has been reviewed and approved by Visa and Immigration Services (VIS)
Important Considerations
-
Remote participation must remain incidental to the overall in-person program
-
Fully remote or primarily remote appointments are not permitted
-
Any changes to work location or schedule must be reported to VIS in advance
Questions
If you are considering a hybrid work arrangement or have questions about your eligibility, please contact Visa and Immigration Services (VIS) before making any changes.
