H-1B Travel Within the U.S.
Whether you are traveling for a conference, vacation, research collaboration, or personal reasons, it is important to carry documentation showing that you are maintaining valid H-1B status while traveling within the United States.
Domestic travel does not involve applying for a visa or passing through U.S. Customs
and Border Protection (CBP) inspection. However, you may still be requested to present
proof of identity and immigration status during your travels.
Recommended Documents for Domestic Travel
When traveling within the United States, carrying the following documents with you is recommended:
- Valid passport
- Most recent I-94 admission record
- Proof of employment from HR (recommended)
You should keep these documents in your carry-on bag and easily accessible while traveling.
Lost or Stolen Documents
If your passport or immigration documents are lost or stolen while traveling, contact local law enforcement immediately and retain a copy of the police report.
You should also contact:
- Your country’s embassy or consulate
- Visa and Immigration Services (VIS)
Replacement processing times may vary, so you should plan accordingly.
