Travel Signatures
On this page, you will learn what a travel endorsement is, how to check if your endorsement is valid, and how to request a new one before you travel.
What Is a Travel Endorsement?
A travel endorsement is a signature from your Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) or Designated School Official (DSO), also called your VIS advisor. You can find this signature on page 2 of your Form I-20.
This signature confirms that you are maintaining your F-1 status and are eligible to re-enter the United States after traveling abroad.
You must have a valid travel endorsement each time you re-enter the U.S., even if you are only traveling to Canada or Mexico for a short trip.
How Do You Check If Your Travel Endorsement Is Valid?
You can find your travel endorsement at the bottom of page 2 of your most recent Form I-20.
Check the date next to the advisor’s signature. Your travel endorsement is valid for a limited time:
- If you are an enrolled student, your travel endorsement is valid for 1 year from the date it was signed.
- If you are on Post-Completion OPT or STEM OPT Extension, your travel endorsement is valid for 6 months from the date it was signed.
If your endorsement will expire before you return to the United States, you must request
a new one before you travel.

If you are a new student with an “Initial Attendance” I-20, you were issued a travel endorsement with your document.
If you are a transfer student with a “Transfer Pending” I-20, you will receive a travel endorsement after you complete your required International Student Check-In.
How Do You Request a New Travel Endorsement?
Plan ahead. You should request a new travel endorsement at least 5–7 business days before your departure.
To request a travel endorsement, submit the Travel Signature Request through accessVIS. Your VIS advisor will review your request and confirm your eligibility.
If your request is approved, you will receive a new Form I-20 with an updated travel endorsement. You will download this document from your accessVIS account.
Electronic I-20s are accepted by the U.S. government. You do not need an original ink signature for travel, and this also applies to your dependents.
