Update Your Address

You must report any change to your address within 10 days. This is required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

You must keep all of the following addresses up to date:

  • On-campus address: where you live in university housing
  • Local address: where you live in the U.S. (off campus)
  • Foreign home address: your permanent address outside the United States

Update Your On-Campus Address

If you live on campus, you must work with Campus Residences to updated your housing address.

Contact Campus Residences to confirm that your current dormitory address is correctly updated in SOLAR. This ensures your address is reported accurately in SEVIS.


Update Your Local (Off-Campus) Address

You must update your U.S. local address in SOLAR.

Steps to Update Your Address:
  1. Log in to SOLAR using your Stony Brook ID and password
  2. Select Security and Personal Data
  3. Click Addresses
  4. Select Add a New Address
  5. Enter your U.S. address
  6. Select Local as the Address Type
  7. Click Save, then OK

Your updated address will appear in the system. VIS will report this information to SEVIS.

Important: Even if your address is listed as “Home” or “Mailing,” you must still add it as your Local address.

Format Your Address Correctly

Enter your address using the format below:

  • Street Address Line 1: 123 S MAIN ST APT 101
  • Street Address Line 2: (leave blank if not needed)
  • City: STONY BROOK
  • State: NY
  • Postal Code: 11790

Use standard abbreviations and enter your address in all capital letters when possible.


Update Your Foreign Home Address

If your address outside the United States changes, you must report the update to Visa and Immigration Services (VIS).

To update your foreign address:

  1. Log in to accessVIS
  2. Submit the Foreign Address Update eForm

VIS will report your updated address in SEVIS.
