Student Media Council
The Student Media Council (SMC) serves as the coordinating committee for all student media organizations at Stony Brook University, and serves as the student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists affiliated with the Press Club of Long Island. Its membership includes representatives from each student media group, professional and student staff from the Student Media Services Office, and faculty advisors, and its goals are achieved through the collaborative effort of all of these parties.
The SMC exists to provide support, guidance, and mentorship to student media organizations.
It offers a forum for discussion and resolution of issues affecting student media,
and organizes press conferences, meetings, events, guest speakers, and collaborative
programs throughout the year, both on and off campus, with local, regional, and national
partners.
The SMC is run by the Assistant Director for Student Media Services. While the SMC
does not receive separate funding, it is supported by the larger departmental operation
to ensure that resources are available to actively promote ethical journalism standards,
including but not limited to maintaining affiliations with professional organizations
such as the Society of Professional Journalists.
The Council meets regularly throughout the academic year. To learn more about getting
