Recommended Naming Resolution Dina Malgeri Library - Center for Italian Studies

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Stony Brook Council approve naming the "Dina Malgeri Library - Center for Italian Studies" in recognition of her over forty years as Director of the Malden Public Library at Stony Brook University.

 

BACKGROUND

WHEREAS Dina Malgeri served with distinction for over forty years as Director of the Malden Public Library, establishing a legacy as an esteemed librarian, educator, and champion of public knowledge, historic preservation, and community literacy; and

WHEREAS Dina Malgeri devoted her professional life to advancing educational access, cultural enrichment, and public service, earning academic credentials from Harvard Extension School and Simmons College while serving diverse regional and international communities across Massachusetts and abroad; and

WHEREAS Dina Malgeri provided transformational financial contributions, including a gift from her estate, to establish and support the Francesco P. and Dina D'Alto Malgeri Endowment in Italian Culture, named in honor of her parents. Her generous gifts, amounting in $699,950, have secured ongoing funding for initiatives advancing the Center for Italian Studies at Stony Brook University; and

WHEREAS Stony Brook University proudly recognizes the enduring legacy of Dina Malgeri, whose unwavering dedication to academic excellence, intellectual discourse, cultural education, and the advancement of knowledge reflects the core values of the institution and its scholarly community; and

WHEREAS in recognition of this generous philanthropic support and permanent impact, Stony Brook University has formally designated the Center for Italian Studies Library housed in the Melville Library as the Dina Malgeri Library, establishing a perpetual tribute to her passion for higher education, cultural heritage, and academic exploration;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE STONY BROOK COUNCIL, THAT:

In recognition of the generosity, vision, and lifelong dedication of Dina Malgeri to education, libraries, and historic preservation, the Stony Brook Council hereby endorses the naming of the Center for Italian Studies Library as the Dina Malgeri Library, honoring her legacy and ensuring that future generations of students, faculty, scholars, and visitors will benefit from and be inspired by her enduring commitment to learning and the humanities.

The Stony Brook Council authorizes Chair, Kevin S. Law, to transmit this resolution to the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York.
