HEALTH & SAFETY INSPECTIONS

Purpose Of Health & Safety Inspections

Inspection Process

The Health and Safety Team (HST). The HST are student assistants who report to Residential Safety and Support Services and are specifically trained to conduct Health & Safety inspections within Campus Residences.

At least two members of the Health and Safety Team will enter living spaces (bedrooms, apartment/suite’s kitchen, bathrooms, and common room) to complete a visual inspection of the space. The HST does not open closets, wardrobes, dressers, or look under beds unless necessary, as this may indicate a potential hazard.

No. The Health and Safety Team will conduct the inspection with or without you present. If you are not present at the time of the inspection, you will receive a notice with the inspection's outcome.

Refer to the Terms of Occupancy and ensure your room complies. The Terms of Occupancy and a list of commonly found prohibited items can be found on our Policies webpage.

You will receive communication within the next 7-10 business days regarding the next steps. If the violation is from a prohibited item, it will be confiscated as outlined in the Terms of Occupancy VI.A.2. Please note that the HST is not part of the conduct process and cannot answer questions on behalf of that process.

The report is filed, and all occupants of the bedroom or suite, or apartment are listed.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the Health & Safety Team cannot determine who is responsible, all occupants of a space are added to the report.

Normally, you cannot retrieve your item until you have a meeting regarding the violation. Once this meeting is completed, please proceed to your building/area staff to retrieve your item.

The Terms of Occupancy state:

Items such as cigarettes, nicotine and tobacco products, marijuana and cannabis products, and paraphernalia are subject to confiscation and immediate disposal. Volatile chemicals, flammable liquids and fuels, matches, and lighters will be turned over to the university emergency services for disposal. Prohibited items or items deemed unsafe will be subject to the process outlined above, regardless of their ornamental or sentimental value or functioning status. (VI.A.3 & 4). Moreover, alcohol found in violation of the University's alcohol policy is subject to disposal- even if the owner is of legal drinking age. (IV.C.1)

The conduct process at Stony Brook is highly individualized, and as such, there are no "standard answers" they can give. All questions regarding the conduct process should be directed to your area or building staff.
