Life at Stony Brook

As you begin your new chapter here at Stony Brook, there are many things to know to have the smoothest start possible! On this page, you can learn more about eating on campus and the common words associated with meal plans, all about health and safety, and about connecting to Wi-Fi and important apps.

On Campus Dining

Most international students are required to have an on-campus dining plan that includes both meal swipes and dining dollars. Please be aware that meal swipes and dining dollars have different starting and ending dates each semester, which can be found on SBU Eats' (Campus Dining) website

  • Meal Swipes - may be used at West Side Dine-In or East Side Dine-In regardless of where you live. One Meal Swipe is equal to one meal at either location. Meal Swipes do not roll over and expire at the end of each semester. The remaining number of meal swipes are forfeited and will not be refunded in any way.
  • Dining Dollars - may be used at any dining location, including the SBU Eats Food Trucks and at retail locations. Remaining Dining Dollars roll over between the Fall and Spring semesters. However, the last day to use Dining Dollars is commencement day of the Spring semester. Dining Dollars do not roll over from the Spring to Fall semesters and any remaining balances are forfeited and will not be refunded in any way.
  • Guest Passes - Unlimited meal plans include Guest Passes which can be used to swipe in a visiting friend or family member at Dine-In Locations (East and West Side Dine-Ins) only. Guest passes do not roll over and expire at the end of each semester. Any remaining balances are forfeited and will not be refunded in any way.
  • Meal Exchanges - Some meal plans will have meal exchanges you can use at the Roth Cafe. For more information on Meal Exchanges, check out the Dining website.

Health and Safety on Campus

Stony Brook University wants to ensure all students stay both safe and healthy here on campus. Check out some of our tips below!

All international students are required to have sufficient health insurance coverage while studying in the United States. Stony Brook University automatically enrolls all new international students in a health insurance that meets the requirements of the various visa types. This charge will appear in your SOLAR account.

Undergraduate international students with a pre-existing health insurance coverage who wish to apply to waive SBU's insurance must meet a minimum coverage requirements as set for their visa status. To start the process of potentially waiving SBU's insurance plan, students interested must complete the waiver on Haylor's SBU Website. Waivers are only accepted during specific dates.

Stony Brook University is proud to support their students' health through a number of services.

  • Student Health Center - conveniently located at 1 Stadium Road on campus, just behind the Union and near the Stadium. This Center is open 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays and closed on the weekend. The Student Health Center offers free or significantly reduced medical care for full-time students.
  • TimelyCare - a 24/7 tele-health service that allows students to speak with medical professionals who can assist with minor medical concerns during times that the Student Health Center is closed or appointments are fully booked. TimelyCare offers free or significantly reduced medical care for full-time students.
  • University Hospital Emergency Room - The University Hospital's Emergency Room is close to main campus and is open 24/7 for all major medical concerns, including but not limited to head injuries, broken bones, extremely high and consistent fevers, etc. Please note that Emergency Rooms in the United States may operate differently than your home country and can be expensive, even for those with medical insurance. While we encourage you to use the Emergency Room if needed, please keep in mind that it is not meant for routine or simple medical issues such as head colds, minor pains, etc.

Rideshare Apps are popular ways to get around to places that do not have public transportation. However, they tend to be more expensive than public transportation. Two of the most popular and common Rideshare Apps in the Stony Brook area are listed below.

  • Uber: Probably the most well known of the Rideshare Apps, Uber is usually slightly more expensive than other apps, but can have greater availability and more flexibility on types of rides.

Food Delivery Apps are popular, but expensive in the United States. The food cost, app fees, and taxes can add up quickly. It is also important to remember the American Culture requires additional cost of tipping delivery drivers between 10-20% of the total bill. Also, please note that you will need to meet your delivery driver at the outside door of your campus residence as they may not be able to access all parts of campus. The two more common food delivery apps are listed below.
  • DoorDash: This app is usually slightly cheaper for food orders, but can have more limited delivery availability.
  • Uber Eats: Part of the Uber Rideshare App, Uber Eats can occasionally be more expensive than other delivery options, but usually has more delivery availability.

PLEASE NOTE: To download these apps, it may be necessary to change the region on your phone to the United States.
