Stony Brook University launched the Strategic Budget Initiative (SBI) in Fall 2020 to address significant financial deficits brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative brought together roughly 400 faculty and staff across five task forces — Research and Innovation, Operations Alignment, Academic Programs, Productivity, and Revenue Generation — to identify ways to stabilize the University's finances and uncover new revenue opportunities. The process unfolded in three phases: first, sharing transparent financial data to help the community understand the scope of the challenge; then partnering with campus stakeholders through listening sessions, operational evaluations, and community-generated ideas; and finally, implementing task force recommendations to contain costs, allocate resources strategically, and build a stronger financial foundation for the University's future.

Since the launch of SBI, our community has come together around a shared mission: strengthen our financial health and build a foundation that supports this institution for years to come.

Given the challenges of the past several years, that task at times felt monumental — but this community has met it with resourcefulness, creativity, and resolve. The disciplined work of containing costs, spending strategically, and allocating resources judiciously has made a measurable impact on our financial position, generating one-time fund balances that can now be strategically reinvested in areas of opportunity.

One of the most lasting outcomes of the Strategic Budget Initiative has been its impact on how we report and understand our finances. As the institution moved toward all-funds budgeting, it became clear that our reporting methodologies needed to evolve alongside it — better aligning expenses with the functions they support, and reflecting the more participatory, transparent budget process now in place. These changes are being implemented gradually, so year-to-year comparisons may show some variances; where that's the case, we've made note of it.

Transparency remains central to how we operate. We aim to be forthright about our financial challenges and clear about the strategies we're using to address them — sharing not just financial data from the past fiscal year, but insight into how we've planned for the current one.
