Graduate Student Employee Health Plan (Optional)

Who is Eligible?

Teaching Assistants (TA), Graduate Assistants (GA), Research Project Assistants (RPA) and their dependents. Go to the Human Resources website for eligibility requirements.

There are only two opportunities to enroll in the health insurance plan:

  • Within 30 days of your appointment date (deductions will be taken retroactively to cover you from the first day of employment).
  • During the annual open enrollment period in August of each year.

Please note: Late enrollments will be subjected to a 30 day waiting period from the date the enrollment form is received in the Student Health Insurance Office.

Please go to the Human Resources office in the Administration Building or call (631) 632-6180 for more information.

To process your health insurance enrollment application you must submit a copy of the following items for yourself and each person you wish to cover. Your enrollment application will not be processed if the following items are not attached (copies will not be made in our office):

  • Birth Certificate or Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • Marriage Certificate

You must confirm with your department that you are eligible to enroll in the employee coverage, and then enroll directly with HR Benefits. You can email them at hrs_benefits@stonybrook.edu or call them at (631) 632-6180.

Graduate students with domestic health insurance coverage can enter their own waiver in Solar up until the first day of classes. To complete this process, please log into Solar under "Campus Financial Services", and then "Required Health Insurance/Waiver" and follow the prompts.

Select you will be full-time, then submit and update waiver now, to enter your insurance information. Be sure to hit submit when done.

You will need to have your insurance card handy to complete this process.

Please note that all submitted waivers will be verified by our Broker.

Undergraduate International students with domestic health insurance coverage who wish to waive insurance should go to haylor.com/college/stony-brook-university to fill out a waiver.

Insurance waiver requests must be submitted by the first day of classes.

When you look at your account in Solar, please be sure to look at all charges and then credits for each term (you may need to scroll down).

The account will look like a credit card statement. One line will be the charge for insurance, and a separate line will be the waiver (appearing as a negative dollar amount).
