The Study Abroad Office at Stony Brook University has developed an award for high-achieving students to help offset the cost of study abroad. Awards range from $1,000-$5,000!

Deadlines:
Summer & Fall: February 15th early decision, April 1 regular decision

Winter  & Spring: October 1st early decision, November 1 regular decision

Eligibility:

• Must be a matriculated SBU student attending an SBU study abroad program.
• Must be receiving at least: 3 credits in winter, 6 credits in summer or 12 credits during the semester.
• Regular Decision (4/1 and 11/1): Students must have submitted a study abroad program application (found under the “Apply” tab on the program page) by the scholarship deadline.
• Early Decision (2/15 and 10/1): Students may apply for the scholarship without a submitted study abroad program application. If awarded, a program application must be submitted before acceptance of scholarship funds.

Application Requirements:

As part of the scholarship application process, students are required to upload a short video essay no more than 2 minutes in length that addresses the following:

• Why you want to participate in your chosen program, and your interest in the country you have chosen to study in
• How your study abroad program related to your major program of study and your long-term goals
• What obstacles or difficulties you anticipate needing to overcome while abroad and how you plan to overcome them
• What you anticipate getting out of the experience
• How you would share what you learn during your study abroad experience with the campus community upon your return

Recipient Requirements: 

Scholarship recipients are required to provide the Study Abroad Office with pictures and videos of their program that meet the following requirements: 

• Individual Photo: One photo of you wearing SBU gear, at a landmark or participating in an academic, cultural, or community activity abroad.
• Group Photo: One photo with fellow study abroad students at a recognizable landmark. Do not submit the same group photo used by other IAP Scholarship recipients.
• Landmark Photo: One photo featuring a recognizable landmark. Avoid duplicating landmarks in future submissions.
• Video Clips: Three video clips, each at least 5 seconds long, showcasing a recognizable landmark, food, excursion, or activity.

Recipients may also be asked to speak at a panel discussion, information session, Study Abroad Fair or be featured on an IAP or SBU Instagram page

Notes:

• Scholarships are awarded based on total program cost to the individual and academic performance
• Specific funding has been allocated for Freshman, EOP, Transfer and  Athletes - these students are encouraged to apply!
• In order to apply, students must submit a statement of purpose outlining how these funds and their experience abroad will contribute to their future career in addition to a series of questions regarding their student status. 

Since 2016, we have awarded over $250,000 through this scholarship fund!

Country/Region: Florence University of the Arts (Italy)
Amount: Full Program Fee
Eligibility Criteria: Matriculated students, (One student may be selected per semester; prior recipients are ineligible). A minimum of one semester of an Italian language course required. Students must not be graduating in the semester immediately following their FUA semester study abroad program in order to support on-campus recruitment efforts.

Florence University of the Arts, American University in Florence (FUA-AUF) will offer a one semester scholarship to a deserving student participating in a SBU FUA-AUF semester program. The scholarship will be applied to your SBU program fee.

While enrolled at FUA-AUF, the selected recipient will serve as the SBU Student Representative. Tasks include:

• A minimum of 10 hours a week working in the FUA-AUF Student Life and Development Office
• Promotion and participation in student services activities and events
• Maintenance of SBU/FUA-AUF social media
• General communications with SBU program students
• Support SBU students participating on the Freshman Launch Year (FLY) program at FUA-AUF
• Assistance in special projects as needed

Amount: Up to $5,000
Eligibility Criteria: U.S. Citizen, Undergraduate in good academic standing, students receiving the Federal Pell Grant.

Offers awards for study abroad to U.S. citizen students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2 year or 4 year college or university. Selected by competition, recipients are awarded up to $5000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad.

The Bill Arens Scholarship is in memory of Dr. William Arens, former Anthropology Faculty member and Dean of International Academic Programs. His research in East Africa sparked the start of the Academic Safari study abroad program in Tanzania. This scholarship has been created by his family to support students who will study abroad in East Africa through Stony Brook University.

Eligibility:

• Must be a matriculated SBU student attending an SBU study abroad program with at least a GPA of 3.0.
•  Must be receiving at least: 3 credits in winter, 6 credits in summer or 12 credits during the semester.
• Must have submitted the study abroad application (located on our website, under the “Apply” tab on all program pages) by the deadline of this scholarship. 

In order to apply, students must submit a statement of purpose outlining how these funds and their experience abroad will contribute to their future career. Additionally, students must submit the application below.

All SUNY students with a submitted SBU study abroad application to the Middle East Technical University (METU) Summer School for Summer 2026 are eligible to apply. Multiple awards will be granted and recipients may have the opportunity to receive over $1,000 in funding.

Application Requirement:

Students are required to upload a short video essay (no more than 2 minutes) using Zoom or Microsoft Teams that addresses the following:

• Why you want to participate in the Middle East Technical University Summer School program and your interest in studying in Turkey
• How this program relates to your major and your long-term goals
• What challenges you anticipate while abroad and how you plan to handle them
• What you hope to gain from the experience
• How you plan to share what you learn with the campus community when you return

Eligibility Criteria: Matriculated undergraduate or graduate students, U.S. citizens, and must demonstrate interest in a career in public service

Focuses on geographical areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Emphasized world regions include Africa, Asia, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. Study of a foreign language appropriate to the identified country must be part of each proposal.

The Bridging Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan aids undergraduates majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be a US citizen or permanent resident and be enrolled as an undergraduate in a college or university in the US.

The Mariolein Rijssenbeek Study Abroad Award is a scholarship that encourages and supports French majors to go and study French language and culture in any Francophone destination. Priority is given (but not limited) to applicants to semester-long programs. Available financial aid amounts $2,000 and may be broken down and shared between several candidates.

Application requirements are as follows:

• Declared major in French
• Overall GPA minimum of 3.00
• One recommendation from a former (not current) French professor
• Personal statement of intent

Eligibility Criteria: Matriculated SBU students on the Universitat Konstanz program, 3.0 GPA

The state of Baden-Wuerttemberg is providing a Stony Brook University student that is studying at the Universität Konstanz for their spring semester. The scholarship amounts to 700 € each month for one semester. 

Eligibility: 

• Must be a matriculated SBU student participating on the Universität Konstanz study abroad program
• Must have at least a 3.0 GPA
• Student must study at Konstanz University during their spring semester (March/April-July)

Note: As the Universität Konstanz fall semester directly conflicts with the start date of SBU’s spring semester start, students are only permitted to participate in this program during the spring semester. Accommodations cannot be made for students to depart their program early due to this conflict. Exceptions can only be made for students who are studying abroad during their last semester at SBU.

Kristianstad University is offering the following the Erasmus Scholarship in the amount of:

• Travel cost: 820 euros
• Semester Expenses: 3,600 euros

Eligibility:

• Stony Brook University business major, minor or area-or-interest student 
• 3.0 or above GPA 
• Submitted SBU study abroad application to Kristianstad University

• Scholarship recipients are required to provide the Study Abroad Office with pictures of their program. Pictures can be of the scholarship recipient, a group of study abroad students, a landscape, landmark and more.
• Recipients may also be asked to speak at a panel discussion, information session, Study Abroad Fair or be featured on an IAP or SBU Instagram page
