Sha Sun is an Adjunct Lecturer in the School of Communication and Journalism at Stony Brook University. She received her Ph.D. in Communication Studies, with a focus on organizational communication and technology, from the Moody College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin in May 2026.
Grounded in organizational communication, her research lies at the intersection of global organizations, communication geography, and labor studies. She employs a critical spatiotemporal lens to examine diverse, fluid organizational and communication activities. Her dissertation, Communicating Acceleration in Fast-Fashion Supply Chains: A Spatiotemporal Lens on Fluid Organization, examines the emergence of spatiotemporal infrastructures that facilitate accelerated global flows of fast-fashion commodities and how garment workers in China navigate constrained work and living environments. This research contributes to understanding how the logics of acceleration are communicatively constituted across space and time within global organizational contexts. Her research methods are primarily qualitative, with an emphasis on ethnography. Her research has been published in Media and Communication, and her work has received Top Paper Awards from the National Communication Association (NCA) in 2022 and 2025.
Her teaching centers on connecting communication theory with contemporary social, organizational, and technological issues. At Stony Brook, she teaches Critical Media Theory and Team Collaboration and Community Engagement, where students engage with critical approaches to media and communication and with collaborative, fieldwork-based inquiry into teams and communities. She has also taught Professional Communication Skills at The University of Texas at Austin and Public Speaking at Oklahoma State University–Oklahoma City. Across her teaching, she emphasizes curiosity and awe in learning and teaching (attitude), dialogic feedback (core practice), and cultivating meaningful connections with oneself, others, and the world (ultimate goal).
