Employment Opportunities in the Department of Political Science

Stony Brook University, home to many highly ranked graduate research programs, is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island’s scenic North Shore.  Our 1,100-acre campus is home to 24,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff.  The Department of Political Science is recognized for its faculty and research as one of the top departments in the nation.

The Department does not actively advertise part-time teaching positions, but we do consider applications from qualified individuals to teach in our department. We are only considering part-time instructors for our BA in Political Science and MA in Public Policy programs. Course offerings are typically determined at least a year in advance. If you are interested in teaching in our department, please review our current course offerings (linked below, by program) and needs and indicate in your cover letter which courses you are qualified to teach. 

  • B.A. in Political Science - POL 100 through POL 380
    • We are particularly interested in instructors in the area of comparative politics.
  • M.A. in Public Policy - POL 501 through POL 543
    • We are particularly interested in instructors in areas of health policy and environmental policy.

Our administrative office hires part-time Student Office Assistants to help with the day-to-day administrative and project tasks in the department. We typically hire in August or September of the academic year. We are only able to hire students with Federal Work Study aid packages.
