Asha Leeana Bhandary

Asha Leena Bhandary is Professor and Vice Chair of Care Ethics Research, Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care and Bioethics and Family, Population and Preventive Medicine and also Professor, Department of Philosophy. She is a social and political philosopher working at the intersection of the ethics of care, philosophy of race, reproductive justice, and political theory. Her first monograph, Freedom to Care: Liberalism, Dependency Care, and Culture (Routledge, 2020), was the subject of journal symposia in Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy and Dialogue: Canadian Philosophical Review.  Her second monograph, Being at Home: Living Autonomously in an Unjust World (Oxford University Press, 2026) will be the subject of a symposium commissioned by the Asian Journal of Philosophy.  She is also the author of many articles and book chapters, co-editor of Caring for Liberalism: Dependency and Liberal Political Theory with Amy R. Baehr, and co-author of a video game about caregiving.

 

Bhandary is currently writing the books Intersectional Liberalism: how belonging secures care, and care is required for freedom, to be translated into Greek for the Rizareio Foundation of Greece, and Grounding Reproductive Justice, a co-authored book under contract at Edinburgh University Press.

 

Bhandary has held multiple national leadership positions in philosophical organization as Chair of FEAST, Co-Chair of PIKSI, and Chair of the APA Committee on Asian and Asian American Philosophers and Philosophies and a member of the APA Committee on Inclusiveness in the Profession. She is also the Founder and Director of the Care Lab, a Philosophy Research Lab. At Stony Brook University, the Care Lab is a cross-campus research collaboration, which Bhandary directs as Vice Chair of Care Ethics Research with a joint appointment in the Department of Family, Population and Preventive Medicine and the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care & Bioethics.
