BE/MS Accelerated Program
The BE/MS Accelerated Program is designed to allow eligible Mechanical Engineering students to graduate with both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in five years. Students who graduate through the Accelerated BE/MS Program have significant advantages such as:

About The Program
UG to MS Process
The Accelerated BE/MS program is designed to allow mechanical engineering students with good academic standing to graduate with both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in five years. This is enabled by allowing undergraduate students in the program to take multiple graduate courses as their undergraduate technical electives. These graduate courses will also be counted towards their Master's degree.
Double-Counting Policy
Due to the Graduate School policy, up to two courses taken during an undergraduate student may be counted for the both degree. Note that if the third elective is taken during a graduate student, up to three courses may be double counted.
Important Note
It is not generally recommended as it would delay a student to satisfy the BE requirement as well as require taking nine courses during the fifth year as a graduate student.

Admissions FAQs
The department typically hosts an information session in the fall semester. Details
will be sent out via email.
- Be a current Mechanical Engineering student at Stony Brook.
- A cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 by application submission.
- At least junior standing.
A minimum cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 GPA at the time of application.
Students have until the end of their senior Fall semester to apply.

to receive application instructions.
Yes. Students can participate as a part-time student but should be aware, changing
may extend the length of time to complete the MS degree requirements.
Students can expect to receive a decision in 3-5 weeks.
Students who need to withdraw should submit the Withdrawal from APP form on the Graduate School website.

Students can find program requirements and other related MS Program information on

Students are able to enroll in any 500-level MEC course, so long as they receive GPD
and UPD approval.
BE/MS program students should request the MEC 500-Level Course Request google form
from the Undergraduate or Graduate Program Coordinator. The GPD and UPD will review
your request and issue a decision via email that can be used for your Graduate School
form.
Students interested in registering for a summer course should email the Graduate Program
Coordinator for information on requesting an early matriculation.

Once in MS student status, students are expected to move from Undergraduate housing

MS programs at Stony Brook (and most US institutions) are typically self-funded. There
are some opportunities that Accelerated BE/MS program students may qualify for including
Research Assistant positions through faculty projects, Graduate School funding opportunities, fellowships and scholarships through the Center for Inclusive Education, and SPIR program student opportunities.
Yes, it is mandatory for ALL Mechanical Engineering graduate students to attend orientation
that is held the week before classes begin.
