High School Students Explore AI-Powered Engineering in Summer Experiential Learning Course

 

This summer, the Stony Brook Department of Mechanical Engineering welcomed students to Engineering Problem Solving with AI, an immersive one-week course for junior and senior high school students. Taught by Prof. C.E. Colosquithe course introduced modern engineering through hands-on, project-based learning. Participants tackled real-world challenges in structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, and autonomous systems while learning to program in MATLAB with the support of generative AI tools; a trend known as "vibe coding".

Throughout the course, students developed computational models, explored artificial intelligence techniques for engineering analysis, and applied AI-assisted coding and problem-solving to practical engineering projects. By combining engineering fundamentals with emerging AI technologies, the program provided students with valuable computational skills and an early look at how artificial intelligence is transforming engineering practice and preparing the next generation of innovators. The course also highlights the importance of responsible AI use and the potential consequences of its misuse.

The students, who aim to be future STEM professionals, appreciated the course for making engineering and AI both engaging and accessible. Vivian H. reflected on the value of exploring how generative AI can be applied across different engineering contexts, highlighting that building a simple neural network was a high point of the experience. Another student, Jacob K., noted that the course was a highlight of his summer, providing an opportunity to build coding skills from the ground up while using AI tools creatively to develop projects such as maze games, which teach the basis of autonomous navigation systems. These bright students who devoted their summer to learning are the future of engineering.
