HLL Receives Historic, Generous Donation!
We are proud and thrilled to announce that HLL received a historic donation last December 2025 that allowed us to create The Adrián Pérez Melgosa Endowed Fund for Excellence in Hispanic Languages and Literature. This generous philanthropic gift, and matching support for New York State, resulted in an endowment of more than $1 million! The endowment will annually generate funds to support a range of activities and awards for our BA, MA, and PhD students.
The Fund was established to cultivate, sustain, and advance excellence in the Department of Hispanic Languages & Literature by providing financial support for research and education, particularly through fellowships and awards for our undergraduate and graduate students.
This fund honors the memory and legacy of Dr. Adrián Pérez Melgosa (1962-2022), Associate Professor of Hispanic Languages and Literature, whose service to Stony Brook University from 2001 to 2022 included roles as Director of Graduate Studies in Hispanic Languages and Literature, curriculum developer for the Major in Globalization Studies, and Director of the Humanities Institute.
After receiving this generous donation, the department has implemented and granted a variety of research funds and awards to support and promote high quality research at the undergraduate and graduate level:
The Endowed Adrián Pérez Melgosa Fund (Annual Grants):
- Two $5K Research Funds for New PhD Students
- Six $2K HLL Summer Research Travel Awards for PhD Students
- Various $2K Dissertation Chapter Awards (4th Year PhD Students)
