The Value of the Accounting Minor

The Accounting Minor provides students with a strong academic foundation in accounting, serving as a basis for further advanced study at the graduate level. Students who declare the minor often continue their accounting education by enrolling in the MBA or MS in Accounting and Analytics (MSAA) program to deepen their expertise and pursue career opportunities in accounting and finance.

 

Requirements for the Accounting Minor

Students interested in expanding their financial knowledge can apply to the Accounting Minor at Stony Brook University College of Business at any point during their academic career, provided they meet the requirement of having a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20. To complete the minor, students must successfully earn 18 credits, with all courses taken for a letter grade and passed with a grade of C or higher.

Accounting Minor Advisement

Make the Most of the Accounting Minor

Non-Business Students:

We recommend that when Accounting Minor students need help with semester scheduling, they should first see their departmental advisor for their major(s) and then see an Academic Advisor in First Year & Second Year (FYSY) Advising or Upper Class Advising (Third Year and Beyond).

Students who wish to see a CoB Advisor for help with semester scheduling should do so in plenty of time (i.e., about 1–2 months) before an upcoming registration period. This is particularly important for students in the first or second semester of their Senior Year. It is not unusual for Accounting Minor students to see an Advisor every semester, especially after their Sophomore Year.
