Pathways to Research

The following programs facilitate independent research for students in the life sciences. Our goal is to ensure all qualified students interested in biological research can identify and pursue these opportunities by the spring semester of their junior year.

Explorations in STEM Program

Focus: Summer stipends and career development.

This program provides financial support (a summer stipend) for mentored research experiences. It includes career development programming for students pursuing STEM disciplines.

Stony Brook iGEM Team

Focus: Synthetic biology and international competition.

The International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) team is a student-led, summer-long research project. Participants present their work at the International iGEM Jamboree. While there is no dedicated stipend, students receive faculty guidance and access to institutional facilities.

  • Target Audience: Students at all levels interested in synthetic biology.

  • 2026 Application Cycle:

    • Opens: Monday, November 24, 2025

    • Deadline: Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:59 PM

INSPIRE Program

Focus: Peer mentoring and research exposure.

Include New Students through a Peer Introduction to Research Experience (INSPIRE) is a multi-disciplinary initiative promoting engagement for underrepresented and disadvantaged groups.

  • How it Works: "INSPIRE Fellows" (students not yet in research) are paired with "INSPIRE Mentors" (active undergraduate researchers) to observe a research environment firsthand.

URECA (Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities)

Focus: Campus-wide coordination and travel awards.

URECA supports research across all disciplines at Stony Brook. They offer:

Off-Campus Opportunities

Focus: Summer internships and external fellowships.

Immersing yourself in a new environment through an off-campus internship is highly recommended. Explore these databases:
