Think visually. Create fearlessly. Shape culture.
At Stony Brook, creativity is how we see, question, and transform the world. Our programs in Studio Art, Media/Art/Culture, and Art History and Criticism integrate artistic practice with critical thinking—preparing the next generation to engage a rapidly changing world with imagination and purpose.
In Studio Art, students work across traditional and experimental media — from drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking to digital photography, illustration, and animation. Our maker spaces also support projects in electronics, coding, AI, and interactivity, encouraging collaboration between art, science, and technology.
Through Media/Art/Culture, students connect creative practice with theory, working across photography, video, design, and digital media while examining how media and technology transform communication, identity, and community.
In Art History and Criticism, students explore how images, objects, and spaces shape and are shaped by societies across time and place. Courses span ancient to contemporary worlds, cultivating visual literacy, critical writing, and curatorial insight.
