All of our undergraduate majors (Studio Art, Media/Art/Culture, and Art History & Criticism) are non-restricted, meaning there are no additional portfolio requirements or separate departmental applications for initial admission.

To join our community, you must apply directly through the Stony Brook University Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

How to Apply:
  1. Choose your platform: Submit your application via the Common App or SUNY App.
  2. Review Requirements: Please visit the Admissions website for the latest information on deadlines, transcripts, and English proficiency requirements for international students.
  3. Select Your Major: On your application, indicate your interest in one of our Art Department majors.

The MFA in Studio Art is a three-year, 60-credit residency program. Applicants must complete both the university application and the departmental portfolio submission.

How to Apply: Two-Step Process

  1. University Graduate Application via the Graduate School Application Portal
    • Application
    • Transcripts
    • 3 letters of recommendation
  2. Departmental Portfolio (Email Submission)
    Note: All portfolio materials must be combined into a single PDF (max 25MB) and emailed to: GradArt@stonybrook.edu
    • Email Subject Line: MFA in Studio Art Application: [Your Full Name]
    • PDF Contents:
      • Artist Portfolio: Up to 20 images with descriptions
        • Artwork Title
        • Media/Materials/Size
        • Date of production (No artwork older than 3 years, please)
        • Short project descriptions (max 100 words each) can be included within the Artist Portfolio document, or a separate image captions text document may be attached. 
        • Video and durational media should be hyperlinked and playable online within a web browser (Website, Google Drive, Vimeo, YouTube, etc.).
      • Statement of Purpose / Artist Statement: (between 500 and 1000 words) artist statement, creative research, current direction, and aims in pursuing graduate study.
      • Resume / CV: Curriculum Vitae, including contact information, education, exhibitions, professional experience, awards, or recognitions.
