The Department of Art at Stony Brook University provides a robust infrastructure for both creative production and scholarly inquiry. From light-filled studios in the Staller Center to high-tech digital labs and professional lecture spaces, our facilities are designed to support the diverse needs of contemporary artists and historians.
Theory & Research Spaces
Our lecture halls and seminar rooms are the heart of our academic community. Located
within the Staller Center, these spaces feature high-definition projection systems
optimized for the detailed study of visual culture. They host a wide range of activities,
from foundational lectures to intimate graduate seminars and our distinguished guest
speaker series.

Studio Spaces & Fabrication Labs
Dedicated spaces for foundational and advanced practice. Our Design Studio is the hub for Foundations: Idea and Form, while specialized Drawing and Painting studios provide ample natural light and professional setups for observational and expressive work.

Design Studio
The Design Studio is the hub for Foundations: Idea and Form.
Comprehensive facilities for traditional and contemporary printmaking. We provide fully equipped studios for intaglio (etching, engraving), relief (woodblock), monoprint, and lithography.
A robust fabrication environment featuring full-scale metal and wood shops. Advanced sculpture students also have exclusive access to our Bronze Casting Foundry for specialized casting processes.
Managed by IT, these specialized SINC Sites (Hybrid and Fine Art computer labs) serve as the hub for high-end digital production. Students have access to professional software for video editing, 3D modeling, and large-format fine art printing.

Fine Arts SINC Site (Staller Center 1st Floor)

Hybrid Lab SINC Site (Staller Center 4th Floor)
A professional-grade environment for photography and video production. This studio is equipped with high-end lighting grids, backdrops, and essential grip equipment, supporting both controlled commercial setups and experimental media projects.
A dedicated space bridging analog traditions with contemporary practice. We maintain two fully equipped B&W Darkrooms for film processing and silver gelatin printing, fostering a deep understanding of light and chemical processes.
Specialized Creative Spaces
Flexible, interdisciplinary areas designed for experimental projects and rapid prototyping. These spaces encourage hands-on innovation and cross-media exploration (Note: Instructor permission required for use).

Maker Space (Staller Center 4th Floor)
A vital resource for digital art students, providing access to professional-grade equipment. Students can check out DSLR and mirrorless cameras, audio recording gear, and portable lighting kits for off-site or studio use.
