Welcome from the President

President Goldsmith with Wolfie

Greetings, Seawolves!

To our newest students, welcome to Stony Brook. And to our returning students, welcome back. While you have all been spending the summer break in many different ways — traveling the world, gaining valuable experience in jobs and internships, engaging in transformative research or spending quality time with friends and loved ones — I have spent this summer excitedly preparing to serve as Stony Brook’s seventh president. I couldn’t be more excited to join you and begin this new chapter together.

I am so pleased you have entrusted Stony Brook with your education. In return, our campus community will do everything possible to exceed your expectations for your academic journey. Public research universities — especially great ones like ours — possess a special entrepreneurial spirit of infinite possibilities. Here at Stony Brook, you’ll find a culture of creativity and invention. No matter your department or discipline, you will discover new passions, find better ways to serve your community or even create inventions that can help our society advance toward a better future.

Always remember that the brilliant people around you across the humanities, engineering, sciences, medicine and the arts are your best educational resource. So, my advice is to take full advantage of their expertise. Get to know one another. Learn from each other. The breadth of knowledge and experiences you discover at Stony Brook will contribute to your personal and professional success going forward and help you become a better citizen of the world.

Beginning your college journey is exciting, but transitions can also be challenging. Sometimes things won’t go as planned. That certainly happened to me as a first-year engineering student when I struggled with demanding classes and almost dropped out of the major. But I realized that I could learn how to be a successful student under my own definition of success. Overcoming those early struggles gave me a resilience and tenacity that has served me well throughout my career. So, if you experience bumps along the way, or simply have questions about your path at Stony Brook and afterward, know that you are surrounded by a campus community who believes in you and your aspirations and will help you achieve them, including our Student Support Team, Counseling and Psychological Services and Career Center staff.

I recall my own days as an undergraduate student when I found the journey of exploring a broad range of topics and discovering my passion in them to be truly magical. I encourage you to embrace your journey as Seawolves, to take risks, explore new things, question your aspirations and don’t be afraid to fail. I would say that much of my own professional success is because I persevered through failures and learned from them, and that is true of all the successful people I know. I look forward to getting to know the student community at Stony Brook: your opinions, your experiences, your challenges and your wildest ambitions. Together, let’s turn your aspirations into reality.

Kind Regards,

Andrea Goldsmith

President

Family Services and Support also partners with families in working toward student success regardless of where their students are in their academic journey.

Fraternity and Sorority Life

If you are searching for a place that fosters a vibrant community through academic excellence, philanthropy, member development, brotherhood/sisterhood, risk management, and campus relationships, consider joining Stony Brook’s Fraternity and Sorority Life

Our Fraternity and Sorority Community comprises 35+ social, professional, and culturally-based fraternal organizations. Being part of the F&S community means being part of a community that not only supports causes but also is committed to academic excellence. In 2024-2025, they raised over $119,000 to support philanthropic organizations and causes, completed over 7,000 hours of community service, initiated over 370 new members, and achieved a GPA higher than all-campus term and cumulative GPA average for ten consecutive semesters! Please click here to learn more about Stony Brook’s recognized fraternities and sororities.

Interested in joining? Students are eligible to participate in fraternity or sorority recruitment and new member activities only if they have completed 12 credit hours with a 2.5 GPA or better at Stony Brook University or have completed 12 credit hours with a 2.5 GPA or better at another institution. Credits earned during high school do not count toward this requirement. Thus, first-year or transfer students who are in their first semester are not permitted to join, and our organizations should not be inviting them to do so. This deferred recruitment policy is in place because it is important that students new to the University establish their academic and social footing before diving into the time-consuming commitment that fraternity or sorority membership represents.

Some organizations may attempt to operate despite having lost or never gained University recognition. Any operation of these groups is not sanctioned by the institution and is against university guidelines. Students should carefully consider the potential risks before associating with these organizations. A list of all currently recognized organizations can be found on SB Engaged, as well as a list of unrecognized organizations. Organizations without pages on SB Engaged are not recognized or in good standing with the University.

Volunteer!

SBU offers many opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to gain experience while giving back to local communities. During operating hours from 10 am to 4 pm, students can visit the studio for drop-in appointments with a Career Coach to go over their resumes and/or cover letters, gain helpful insights and tips, and more. The studio is a great space to take time to focus and plan for what comes after graduation.

Places to Study:

Melville Library

The Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library is the main library at Stony Brook University and one of the best study spots for all Seawolves. If you need a place to work with no distractions, you can use the library’s quiet sections or rent a free private study room for group meetings or study sessions. The library provides access to over 2 million volumes and hundreds of databases as well as computers and printers. Their open stacks policy allows browsing and on-site use of physical resources.

Humanities Atrium

The beautiful atrium located in the main lobby of the Humanities Building is an amazing study spot for those working during the day. There are many tables and chairs under the windowed ceiling which provides plenty of light for students. While in the Humanities Building there is also space to study in the first-floor study room and the second floor lobby, outside of the Writing Center.

Social Sciences Building

There is ample study space within the Social and Behavioral Sciences building. If you like to study while sitting comfortably on a couch, then this spot is for you. The building is not in the main Academic Mall, so it is rarely overcrowded.

Roth Cafe

This is a great study spot with a nice view of Roth Pond and a few lounge areas that can be used for studying. Although an informal study spot, Roth proves to be one of the best locations to get work done. With Starbucks and a dining location just a few steps away, you will be able to study here for hours.

SoMAS Library

If you enjoy studying in a library but find the Melville library too crowded, the stacks in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences located on South Campus are a great alternative to go. The change of scenery from the main library can also be helpful when looking for motivation.

Music Library

SBU’s Music Library, located on the first floor of the Melville Library has open stacks with collections that cover a vast array of sectors in the field of music. The Music Library is visited daily by students who need to check out printed materials or to complete course listening assignments which are placed on reserve. There is a quiet study section, periodicals area, a listening area, and Mac mini computers for students to use.

Do an Internship

Internships are essential in honing skills, boosting career readiness, and developing competencies. They offer a valuable opportunity to explore potential career paths, gain hands-on experience in a specific industry, and build a resume that stands out, often serving as a direct pathway to full-time employment.

The Career Center connects students to a wide range of experiential opportunities, with thousands of internships offered each year, both on and off campus, for undergraduate and graduate students. These include paid or unpaid, credit or noncredit positions, and can be part-time or full-time, offered during the fall, spring, or summer, and in formats ranging from in-person to hybrid or fully remote. Students can also earn academic credit and fulfill the EXP+ general education requirement, making internships both a practical and academic investment in your future.

Volunteer

Take a Career and Life Design Course

The Career Center offers a variety of credit-bearing courses to equip students with the essential skills for every stage of their career journey. CAR 151: Career & Life Design I encourages students to explore their values, talents, integrating their academic interests with career options. CAR 251: Career & Life Design II strengthens employability skills, actively supporting students with their on-campus part-time employment, research and internship search. CAR 351: Career & Life Design III allows students to engage in deeper exploration of industry sectors, while developing a professional portfolio; the two CAR 351 course topics available for the Fall 2025 semester include "Accounting & Finance" and "Hospitality." For those preparing for life after graduation, CAR 451: Career & Life Design IV focuses on job search strategies and financial literacy skills. Whether students are just starting to think about a career or preparing for life after college, these courses provide the necessary support and tools to feel prepared for their post-graduation plans!

Participate in Research

Stony Brook University (SBU) provides an array of opportunities for undergraduate students to actively engage in research, offering a transformative experience from their very first year. The Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URECA) program serves as a guiding force, supporting students throughout their research journey. Under the expert guidance of URECA, students receive valuable support and resources in initiating their research endeavors. The program not only aids in connecting students with mentors, but also assists in securing essential funding through initiatives such as the URECA Summer Program and the Small/Travel Grants Program. Discover how SBU empowers undergraduate students to contribute meaningfully to the world of research and innovation and visit stonybrook.edu/commcms/ureca. In addition to URECA, students can gain hands-on research experience through the Vertical Integrated Projects (VIP). VIP brings together multidisciplinary teams of students and faculty to work on long-term research and innovation projects that span multiple semesters—offering a collaborative, real-world environment that fosters deep learning and lasting impact.

The Career Center further supports students interested in research; we can assist in identifying opportunities and navigating the application process. Please visit our website for more information.
