Welcome from the President

vp Ric paiting

Welcome New Students!

This year, we look forward to new beginnings, new friendships, new classes, and you – a new Seawolf! Thank you so much for making the important choice of coming to Stony Brook.

Not so long ago,  I took my first steps on campus. And I can tell you coming to Stony Brook is among the best life decisions I have made.

As a newcomer to Stony Brook there is so much to be excited about. While you make your way around campus, I hope you take the opportunity to get acquainted with all the university has to offer. Whether it be taking in a basketball game at the arena, walking around our nearly 1,500-acre campus, or hanging out with Wolfie, our award-winning mascot, there is something for everyone at Stony Brook.

This winter, there are a lot of exciting events happening for new students. Attending these events is one of the best ways to learn more about campus life, and there are quite a few to choose from. Our Weeks of Welcome take place between the last weekend of January through the middle of February. From the women’s basketball game on Friday, January 24 to the Involvement Fairs on January 29 and February 5 to Siblings Weekend on February 15 and 16, Stony Brook will feel like home sooner than you think.

This spring, I hope you take part in some of our campus traditions. Be sure to participate in the Roth Regatta, where students build cardboard boats and race across Roth Pond, sink or swim. There will be an environmental festival, Earthstock, which is a great display of our campus’ resources supporting the health of our planet. There are also many lectures, student club activities, and guest speakers that are on the slate.

Finally, I want to take a moment to remind you all that you are never alone while you are here at Stony Brook. Whether you are seeking future planning services from our Career Center, or mental health resources from our Counseling & Psychological Services, we are here for you.

Best of luck to you in your time here at Stony Brook and welcome.

Kind Regards,

Richard L. McCormick

Interim President

They help students navigate various challenges they may face throughout their college experience, such as medical emergencies, the death of a loved one, academic concerns, housing issues, financial difficulties, and other unexpected events or challenges.

Family Services and Support also partners with families in working toward student success regardless of where their students are in their academic journey.

While the Student Support Team does not offer counseling, they can help in crisis response situations by providing  immediate support and resources. They work closely with campus security, The University CARE Team (Student Behavioral Threat Team), Student Affairs, and other university departments to ensure the well-being of our Seawolves.

Fraternity and Sorority Life

If you are searching for a place that fosters a vibrant community through academic excellence, philanthropy, member development, brotherhood/sisterhood, risk management, and campus relationships, consider joining Stony Brook’s Fraternity and Sorority Life

Our Fraternity and Sorority Community comprises 35+ social, professional, and culturally-based fraternal organizations. Being part of the F&S community means being part of a community that not only supports causes, but also is committed to academic excellence. In 2023-2024, they raised over $103,000 to support philanthropic organizations and causes, completed over 6,500 hours of community service, initiated over 330 new members, and achieved a GPA higher than all-campus term and cumulative GPA average for eight consecutive semesters! Please click here to learn more about Stony Brook’s recognized fraternities and sororities.

- Interested in joining? Students are eligible to participate in fraternity or sorority recruitment and new member activities only if they have completed 12 credit hours with a 2.5 GPA or better at Stony Brook University, or have completed 12 credit hours with a 2.5 GPA or better at another institution. Credits earned during high school do not count toward this requirement. Thus, first-year or transfer students who are in their first semester are not permitted to join and our organizations should not be inviting them to do so. This deferred recruitment policy is in place because it is important that students new to the University establish their academic and social footing before diving into the time-consuming commitment fraternity or sorority membership represents.

Some organizations may attempt to operate despite having lost or never gained University recognition. Any operation of these groups is not sanctioned by the institution and is against university guidelines. Students should carefully consider the potential risks before associating with these organizations. A list of all currently recognized organizations can be found on SB Engaged as well as a list of unrecognized organizations. Organizations without pages on SB Engaged are not recognized or in good standing with the University.

For more information on eligibility to join, visit stonybrook.edu/fsl or email us at sbufsl@stonybrook.edu.

Live Your Best Commuter Life!

commuters lounge door

Commuter students have an incredible network of support at Stony Brook, starting with the Office of Commuter Student Services and Off -Campus Living (CSS/OCL). The office, located in Stony Brook Union 205, is a centralized location for all things related to commuter life. But one of the best resources for commuters is others who have seen it all.

Check out these tips from commuter students on how to make the best out of your SBU experience:

Sign up for a Commuter Assistant

Commuter Assistants (CAs) are a great resource for incoming commuters. Your CA will be your guide to all things SBU by serving as a peer-mentor and friend! They’ll help you navigate everything from parking to registering for classes. You can submit a request for a CA during Orientation or online at stonybrook.edu/commcms/studentaffairs/css/.

Get Involved

College life is what you make it! Join a club, play an intramural sport, or take part in community service events. These are great ways to stay connected to the community and make friends. SBU has more than 400 clubs and organizations, so you’re bound to find something that piques your interest! Check out stonybrook.edu/sbengaged, or download the Corq app for more details.

Dine on Campus - Save Money

You can save money when dining on campus by signing up for a commuter meal plan! Save $50 with the new commuter 550 plan which gives you 550 dining dollars to spend and costs $500. Enjoy delicious options at over a dozen dining locations on the west campus including the SBU Eats food trucks. Save time with mobile ordering through Nutrislice when you use your meal plan to purchase your favorite foods and beverages! View additional commuter plans online.

Take Advantage of Office Hours

Your first semester at a new school can be intimidating, but there are plenty of resources to help you! Take advantage of your professor’s office hours or consult your Teaching Assistant.

Parking Tips

Several parking lots are unrestricted after a certain time of day (check individual lot signage for details). Move your car to a closer parking lot after those given times to make the end of your day easier. Check out the Mobility and Transportation website for information about parking permits and parking times.

Lock it Up

Lockers are offered on campus, in the Commuter Pit Stop Lounge, in the Melville Library, and in the basement of the Student Activities Center. It’s great to have a spot in the center of campus for your stuff so that you don’t have to head back to your car unnecessarily. Visit stonybrook.edu/asa for more info.

Places to Study:

Melville Library

The Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library is the main library at Stony Brook University and one of the best study spots for all Seawolves. If you need a place to work with no distractions, you can use the library’s quiet sections or rent a free private study room for group meetings or study sessions. The library provides access to over 2 million volumes and hundreds of databases as well as computers and printers. Their open stacks policy allows browsing and on-site use of physical resources.

Humanities Atrium

The beautiful atrium located in the main lobby of the Humanities Building is an amazing study spot for those working during the day. There are many tables and chairs under the windowed ceiling which provides plenty of light for students. While in the Humanities Building there is also space to study in the first-floor study room and the second floor lobby, outside of the Writing Center.

Social Sciences Building

There is ample study space within the Social and Behavioral Sciences building. If you like to study while sitting comfortably on a couch, then this spot is for you. The building is not in the main Academic Mall, so it is rarely overcrowded.

Roth Cafe

This is a great study spot with a nice view of Roth Pond and a few lounge areas that can be used for studying. Although an informal study spot, Roth proves to be one of the best locations to get work done. With Starbucks and a dining location just a few steps away, you will be able to study here for hours.

SoMAS Library

If you enjoy studying in a library but find the Melville library too crowded, the stacks in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences located on South Campus are a great alternative to go. The change of scenery from the main library can also be helpful when looking for motivation.

Music Library

SBU’s Music Library, located on the first floor of the Melville Library has open stacks with collections that cover a vast array of sectors in the field of music. The Music Library is visited daily by students who need to check out printed materials or to complete course listening assignments which are placed on reserve. There is a quiet study section, periodicals area, a listening area, and Mac mini computers for students to use.
