Marine Sciences Field Station
The Southampton Marine Station is operated by the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS). The purpose of the Marine Station is to provide support for undergraduate and graduate programs, research, and educational programs.
Facilities
The Marine Station consists of classroom/laboratories, boats, docks and support facilities. Three classroom/laboratories can each accommodate 24-30 students. The Seawater Laboratory provides tables with running seawater and aquariums and maintains live marine organisms for classes, research and educational activities throughout the year.
Three large boats provide floating classrooms and research support : The R/V Paumanok, a 44-foot vessel is outfitted for coastal ocean research; The R/V Peconic, a 45-foot catamaran, and the R/V Shinnecock, a 34-foot catamaran, operate in protected bays and rivers. Five small outboard motor boats ranging from 17 feet to 23 feet round out the fleet and are available to pre-qualified operators.
