Student Health Service
The Southampton Student Health Service is located in the lower level of Southold Residence Hall. The phone number is (631) 632-5014.
A Nurse Practitioner will be available to the Southampton students from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, Thursdays from 12:30-4:30 p.m.
There is no charge for the visits as they are included in the Health Fee paid as part of the University fees. Immediate medical problems will be handled by the Nurse Practitioner who can diagnosis and treat most acute medical illnesses including writing prescriptions.
For more complicated problems, the Nurse Practitioner will provide referrals to physicians in the community or the Emergency Department at Southampton Hospital. The Nurse Practitioner is also trained in women's health and will be able to see patients for routine GYN examinations, provide infection checks for sexually transmitted infections, write birth control prescriptions, and do pregnancy testing.
The Student Health Service will have over-the-counter medication available to treat colds, allergies, stomach aches and headaches at no charge to the students. There are three area pharmacies available to fill prescriptions in the Town of Southampton. Health Education material will be available at the Student Health Service on a variety of topics from mononucleosis to the flu.
If a medical problem arises when the Health Service is closed, Dr. James Guigliano at 290 N Sea Rd., Southampton has agreed to see the Southampton students if they don't need an emergency room visit. His office number is (631) 283-5900 or for immediate care (631) 287-2600. When calling the Student Health Services please indicate that you are a Southampton student.
Student Health Insurance
University policy requires all full time students to have health insurance. The University provides a health insurance plan for which all students are automatically billed. Students who already have equivalent health insurance coverage (through parents, spouse, employment, etc.) may waive this fee by filling out an on-line waiver on SOLAR by the deadline date. Otherwise, they will be responsible for paying the University health insurance premium for the Fall semester.
(Note: International students are required to have different coverage; waiver from this health insurance plan must be done in writing, not online).
For more information, call the Stony Brook University Student Health Insurance Office, weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at (631) 632-6054.
