Academic Advising
The Academic, Career & Internship Office promotes undergraduate students' development and academic success by: providing high quality academic and career counseling to help students grow intellectually and personally; facilitating students' academic transition into and through Stony Brook Southampton and beyond to either graduate school or the world of work.
These goals are achieved by offering proactive communication, programs, student employment and internships that engage students and foster academic connections with the diverse community of scholars and employers.
Each Stony Brook Southampton student receives advising from a professional academic advisor as well as faculty advisors in their area of study. Academic and faculty advisors aim to assist students in the following areas:
- Serve as a central, beginning resource to inform students of available options.
- Help students define, develop, and achieve realistic educational goals.
- Assist students in planning and monitoring an academic program consistent with abilities and interests.
- Communicate and interpret instructional policies, procedures, and requirements.
- Refer students to appropriate academic and student services campus resources.
- Consider requests for exceptions to academic policies and procedures.
- Inform students of special services available for academic assistance.
- Foster a respectful advisor-advisee relationship that focuses on students as unique individuals.
Students, as advisees, have important responsibilities as well:
- Become knowledgeable about and adhere to Stony Brook Southampton policies, procedures, and deadlines.
- Prepare for advising sessions and bring appropriate resources and materials (i.e., Degree Requirement Guidelines, Class Schedule and/or Unofficial Transcript printed from the SOLAR System.)
- Follow through on recommended steps identified during each advising session.
- Attend special programs and events offered by faculty and student services staff.
- Accept final responsibility for decisions.
REGISTRATION FOR CLASSES
All new students will have an advising appointment with an academic advisor for Fall 2008 to discuss their spring class schedule. Information regarding exact dates and times will be communicated by letter and will include available courses and information related to AP and transfer equivalent coursework.
After the telephone advising appointment, each student will be registered for classes by academic advisors and orientation staff, and be sent a class schedule. Upon consultation with an academic advisor, students can make schedule changes directly on SOLAR, Stony Brook Southampton’s Student On-Line Access to Records.
Continuing students will receive an appointment in mid-April through their SOLAR account, which will advise them of the first day that they may register for Summer or Fall 2008 courses.
