Habitat for Humanity 2008

We Need You!
In this stressful and uncertain economic climate, no one is more vulnerable than those already living on the lower economic rungs of our society. Those who struggle on a daily basis to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads need our help now more than ever.

As we proceed with building our 7th Stony Brook University/Habitat for Humanity house, we find ourselves in dire need of financial assistance in order to complete construction. In addition to donating your time to help us build the house, we ask that you consider making a financial contribution as well. As of mid-October, we have a deficit of over $35,000, and approximately 2 months in which to raise the funds. Another campus-wide fundraiser will take place this November, but we need more than those proceeds to meet our goal.

If you are involved with a club or organization that has done some fundraising and are looking to donate to a worthy cause, we hope you will consider Habitat for Humanity as a recipient. The results are tangible as you see the house become a home, and see the family settle in. We guarantee you will walk away knowing that you have made a positive difference in the lives of your neighbors.

The 2008 Habitat for Humanity Stony Brook House is now under construction in Shirley, New York, for a single mom with 7 children, two of whom have disabilities.

Build Dates
October 9, 17, 18, 30, 31
November 6, 7, 8*

*A special Saturday Women's Day Build, November 8, is filling up quickly, so if you are interested in joining the ladies, register now! This build date is now full. Thank you for your interest.

The build dates are tentative, based on inspections and other construction-related delays. Confirmation of the date will be provided once we have met our quota of volunteers. To register for your preferred date, e-mail Catherine.Horgan@stonybrook.edu. If we are unable to fill all volunteer slots for a particular day, the date may be cancelled. Please also note that volunteers must be 18 or older (16-18 year old volunteers require a parent or guardian to be on site due to insurance regulations). The standard work day is 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and volunteers are expected to arrange their own transportation; directions will be provided once a date has been confirmed.

Additional construction dates will be scheduled and work will continue throughout the fall in the hope of completing construction in time for the Christmas holiday. We will update this site as more information  becomes available, so please be sure to check back regularly.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to working with you on this year's house!

Habitat for HumanityAlternative Spring Break
Habitat for Humanity Nicaragua invites you to consider an alternative spring break trip to volunteer on a Habitat housing project in Nicaragua! Enthusiastic volunteers are needed to participate in the Global Village (GV) program that organizes 1-3 week trips to construct homes around the world. In Nicaragua, not only would you be helping out with the construction, but you would also get to know disadvantaged families, experience the Nicaraguan culture, and aid a nation with a deficit of over 500 thousand homes. If you are interested in joining or forming a team of volunteers to come to Nicaragua over spring break or at any other time, the opportunity awaits you. Contact Melissa Schroeder for info.
